Milledgeville becomes fifth city to deploy wireless network with help from WCG

Milledgeville became the fifth Georgia city to deploy a municipal wireless network with assistance from Governor Perdue’s Wireless Communities Georgia (WCG) program when city officials held a “wire cutting” ceremony on October 1, 2009.

The city received $862,500 from the WCG program and supplemented its award with a 35 percent match.  Community leaders partnered with Clearwire Communications of Kirkland, Washington, to develop the wireless network.

Local law enforcement and emergency responders are benefiting from the wireless network by being able to access important information while on site or en route to an incident.  Other applications are being deployed for city government, local businesses and community organizations.

Local governments are responsible for proposing, planning and implementing the wireless projects in their communities.  GTA manages the awards and monitors project implementation.
